Despite a late start, we made it to a campground witha vacancy in Custer, SD. After we had the tent up and started the charcoal for dinner, BOOM! A huge lightning storm hit that lasted for the next 2 1/2 hours or so. In view of the torrential downpour, we gave in and went to Pizza Hut after waiting 30 minutes. Thankfully, our tent only leaked slightly and not where we had set down our bedding.

Spent the day visiting Crazy Horse and Mt. Rushmore. Crazy Horse is the largest sculpture in the world, and is still far from completion. It depicts the native american Crazy Horse astride a horse; his arm points eastward to the lands of his ancestors. The sculpture commemorates native american peoples; there is an associated museum complex.

At the moment Katy and I are back at Rushmore to see it lighted at night. It has been raining hard again this evening---luckily we ate dinner early. With some luck it won't rain too hard during the ceremony [P.S. It poured during the ceremony.].

(Random picture of the Black Hills. The region's name comes from the dark color of the trees, which makes the hills dark, or black.)
